Warcraft Loses 1.3 Million Subs, Still Bigger than Some Countries

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, the behemoth MMORPG that everyone has heard of, has recently reported losing 1.3 million subscribers. While that’s a pretty spectacular figure to casually throw into a conversation, it’s important to remember that is still leaves World of Warcraft with a subscriber total of roughly 8.3 million people. So, y’know, it’s hardly on its death-bed…

The developers are claiming that this loss is mainly occurring in their Asian markets, which isn’t too surprising considering the huge influx of Free-To-Play MMOs that have started flooding the market there. Blizzard have promised to counter this loss by improving the rate of their content releases, but they’ve been promising that for many years now.

The king of MMORPGs is far from dead, but this might be the biggest reported loss of subscriptions I can think of, and 8.3 million is a far cry from the record 12 million active subscriptions once reported. I kicked the habit years ago, moving on to other things that didn’t ask for so much in subscriptions and my life. With so many affordable alternatives out there, I wonder how many other people are starting to think the same thing?
